We are excited to announce our 10th year of summer camps with dynamic interactions and our energetic staff. All Murphy Music Camps are located at Serra High School in San Mateo.
This week is all about the kids reviving and refreshing their interactions with their instrument to get back into shape before school starts up again. Most kids don't get a ton of practice hours in during the summer so in this camp, they can jump start their fall semester with a week of invigorating and challenging instruction from award-winning music director, Joe Murphy (formerly San Carlos Tierra Linda's band director), currently Serra High School's band director.
Each day begins with morning warm-ups, sectionals and small group instruction. Individual practice time is also scheduled to ensure each can focus on their specific needs and skill level. Afternoons consist of a large ensemble instruction as well as a a one-of-a-kind opportunity to try a new band or orchestra instrument! Then at the end of the week, the whole band class and any small ensembles who feel they're ready will perform in a concert on Friday for parents and loved ones. As an elective lunchtime activity, we dabble in Apple's music studio software, GarageBand, where they learn some fundamentals on how to record and produce their own music. There are also lunchtime activities such as Bocce, Kickball and Knockout.
On Friday, we provide a pizza lunch for all the kids. Band and Orchestra campers will frequently work together throughout the week.
The camp is open to participants entering 5th through entering 10th grade. Each participant requires at least 1 year of experience playing on their instrument. Levels of players will vary, so parts will be altered to fit the needs and skills of each player in the camp. Snacks will be provided. Lunch is NOT provided.
On the last day of camp, parents and loved ones are invited to attend the camp concert on Friday at 1:30 pm.

This one-of-a-kind, well-established, fun and creative camp is in its 9th year of existence. We started this camp as a way to teach kids how to create a music video from scratch but it has morphed into something much more special over the past few years. Led by Serra High School's innovative, award-winning music director, Joe Murphy, this camp simulates a whole music creation studio where kids learn to record music digitally using live and software-generated instruments. They learn best practices of form and composition to enable them to write a quality piece of music. Once they create the audio portion, the second half of camp is dedicated to the design and technical production of the video. They will create and write their own storyboard, select the location of their shoot, record the action, then bring it all into the computer to digitally align their music with the key points of action in their video. Sometimes the kids turn these into commercials, instructional videos or simply their own artistic expression.
Using GarageBand, Apple's whole music creation studio as well as iMovie, this Digital Music Video Camp introduces real world technology, audio engineering, music composition, visual design, video composition and final post-production of a music video accompanied by their own music. And for an added bonus, we have access to 32 brand new MacBook Pro computers for our camp and in addition, we have a professional recording studio at our disposal.
Appropriate for kids entering 4th grade through 9th grade. Lunch and aftercare are not provided.
On the last day of camp, parents and loved ones are invited to attend the class video showcase on Friday at 1:30 pm.

As the newest addition to our program, Choir Camp is a one-of-a-kind camp designed specifically for the upper elementary and middle school grades. Led by Mrs. Sara Murphy, this all day camp will offer technique, sight-singing skills, an a capella choir, a jazz choir, audition prep for shows as well as a traditional choir.
In addition to singing in their group, these choir campers will have an awesome opportunity to join our Digital Video Music Camp to learn some production skills and how to record their voices to a karaoke track and make their own music video. Throw in all the other summer camp elements like water balloon fights, a parent concert, pizza Friday and tons of fun with our seasoned team of instructors and I think we’re going to have something very special here.
